What does grid-tied even mean?
A grid-tied inverter takes the energy from your solar panels, converts it into usable electricity output and, by manner of speaking, injects the power into your electrical grid. Then when an appliance needs to consume electricity, the closest source will be your inverter and so power is then drawn from it. If it happens that you require more power than what can be produced by your inverter, your appliances will then start to draw power from the municipal or ESKOM grid.
In contrast, an off-grid inverter is connected to large batteries and solar panels. This type of system functions independent from the municipal or ESKOM grid.
